How To Market Yourself Better

Networking

Network marketing is the most effective and exciting form of lead generation. Effective business networking is building trust and relationships between individuals and therefore becoming walking, talking advertisements for each other. It is important to keep in mind that networking is about being genuine and authentic, building trust and seeing how you can help each other.

A great way to network is to hold volunteer positions in organizations. This is a great way to stay visible and give back to the groups that have helped you.

In networking conversations, you should always ask open ended questions. These include: who, what, when, where, why and how. This is a smart way to avoid yes/no answers, and leaves the door open for further discussions.

You should follow through quickly and efficiently on referrals that are given to you. Your actions reflect back on those who gave you the referral, so you would hate to make them look bad!

It is also important to call those you meet who could benefit from your services and vice versa. Express that you enjoyed meeting them and ask if you both can get together sometime to exchange ideas and learn more about each other’s services.

Helpful Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are a great way to keep things moving when you’re using your computer, and they let you perform tasks without lifting your hands from the keyboard.  These are some of the basics that you should know–at least if you want to cut down on the number of times you reach for the mouse every day.

1. Ctrl+Alt+Del is the mother of all keyboard shortcuts, affectionately known as the “three-fingered salute,” since it’s so useful when your Windows box locks up. Is your machine totally locked up? Reach over, grab the mouse and click Shut Down.

2. Ctrl+S saves the file you’re working on. Ever lost a spreadsheet you’ve been editing? Hit Ctrl+S (simultaneously) to save. Hit it early and often! (Want to open a file from within the program you’re running? Ctrl+O universally opens the File/Open window.)

3. Ctrl+C copies text, files, or icons that you’ve highlighted, Ctrl+V pastes them where you point your mouse (hey, you can’t completely eliminate using it), and Ctrl+X cuts whatever you’ve highlighted out of the document (or folder/file). Ctrl+A highlights the entire file you’re working on or everything in a folder.

4. Alt+Tab lets you switch on the fly between all of your open windows. Press the combination once to switch to your last open window or multiple times to switch to any other open window. Holding down Alt+Tab will bring up a system window that shows you what apps are running and which one you’re switching to.

5. Ever wonder why almost every Windows program has the F in File underlined, not to mention the E in Edit, and so on so forth across the top of the Window? Hit Alt + that letter to open that particular menu; you can either use the arrow keys to move around within that window, or keep your eyes peeled for more underlined letters to use more Alt+ key combinations.

6. The Windows key (the one that looks like the Windows logo) +R opens the Run dialog. You can paste in a folder path, such as C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\Expenses, and Windows will open it automatically. You can also use the Run dialog to open Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, or Notepad. Just type winword to launch Word, type excel to launch Excel, and notepad to launch Notepad.

7. Windows+E launches Windows Explorer, defaulting to My Computer.

8. F2 renames a selected file or folder. (This is so much easier than right-clicking!)

9. F3 launches Search if you’re on the desktop or in a folder.

10. Windows+M minimizes all open windows, and Windows+D shows your desktop. This is a great one for when the boss pops up in your cubicle. Once the boss gone, hit Shift+Windows+M to bring up your minimized windows, or Windows+D to drop your desktop back down again.

There you have it.  This is just a small taste of what you can accomplish by just using your keyboard alone.  There are many more shortcuts out there so keep looking out for them!

- Obtain and install customizable blog software. NeoNexus offers blog software that is fully customized into your website so it looks just like another page on your site. This eliminates taking customers away from your website to read your blog.

- Research keywords and develop a glossary to use within your blogging content.

- Submit RSS feed and Blog URL to prominent RSS and Blog directories.

- Optimize and distribute a press release announcing your blog.

- Request feedback or reviews of your blog in relevant forums, discussion threads.

- Post regularly, at least a few times a week. You shouldn’t post info just for the sake of posting. Each blog should be unique and of high value.

- Always reply to comments on your blog and when you detect a mention of your blog on another blog, thank that blogger in the comments of the post.

- Use social networking services, forums and discussion threads to connect with other bloggers. If they like your stuff, they will link to you.

Tips on how to keep your computer cool.

Today’s computers have built-in cooling fans that keep the computer from overheating during normal use.  If your computer’s cooling fan malfunctions, the computer will overheat and cause irreparable damage.  Keeping the computer fan in tiptop shape is fairly easy.  Just follow these simple steps:

- Do not block any air vents on your PC’s case.  You can also extend the life of your    computer monitor by giving it a little breathing room. Don’t block the air vents on your monitor by piling papers or books on top of it.

- Most fans are on the back of the computer, so position the computer a few inches from the wall.

- Keep draperies and other fabric away from the fan.

- Keep the fan clean and free of debris.

- Keep dogs, cats, and other hairy pets away from the computer.

- Keep your computer in a clean, well-ventilated area.

- Open your case once or twice a year and use a computer vacuum or can of compressed air to clean out built up dust and debris. Do this more often if you have a cat or dog that sheds a lot.

- The room where your system is kept should never be too hot.  How hot is too hot? If it’s uncomfortable for you, it’s probably uncomfortable for your PC as well.

- Don’t put the CPU unit of the computer on the floor.  This is one suggestion that even I don’t always follow.  Yet, if this is feasible, your computer will accumulate less dust and dirt if kept off the floor.

- If you own a laptop, you can’t easily open the case.  Instead, use compressed air to blow out any of the vents or fans and always use a hard surface to put your laptop on.  Placing the laptop on a blanket or other fabric blocks the air vents and will severely effect the performance.

There you have it!  If you keep after these few steps, your PC/Laptop will most likely outlive it’s usefulness due to old hardware but not due to overheated hardware.

Chatcable came to NeoNexus to design a website for them that integrated their news blog and shopping cart without subdomains. They had an existing website, however the integration was not available, and their existing customers had to leave their domain to browse the online products and read current news. Now customers can stay on one site and find all the info they are looking for. You can check out the site at www.chatcable.com

Effective Web Copy

When writing website copy, you should speak to your audience using language they use, anticipate questions they may have, address problems they have that your company can solve, and speak to them so that they feel like you “get it.” There are a number of things you can do in order to write effective web copy.

Use “we” instead of “I” if you are wanting to be perceived as a larger company. Always keep content fresh and updated frequently so customers will want to return to your site. Copy should also be brief and to the point. No one wants to sit there for 30 minutes reading every little thing about your company.

You should include clear call to actions. Phrases such as “Call Us,” “Sign up for our newsletter,” and “Complete our survey” will make visitors take action.

Offer tips and advice.Offering tips and ideas reinforces your expertise to your audiences and makes them want to work with you. The more value your website has, the more often visitors will want to return.

Remember that it is not about you, it is about the reader.Your home page must address the problems and challenges that your visitor may have and tell them how you can help solve them. It should not be all about you and how great your business is. Visitors should look at your homepage and think, “They really can help me.”

Effective we copy involves your visitors and sets the tone for your company. Follow the easy guidelines listed above, and you will be on your way to pleasing your visitors!

7 Deadly Sins of PC Users

This is a short, to the point list of the common mistakes that can be devastating to your home or office PCs.  Do you fall into one of these categories!?  If you do, the time to start is NOW!

1. Ignoring Antivirus updates and scans

a. Allow scans to complete at least once a week.

b. Allow updates to occur daily.

2. Downloading unsafe files

a. If it’s free and you know it shouldn’t be, chances are it’s infected with mal-ware.  Keep to tried and tested software and other files.

3. Neglecting power surge protection

a. Power surges/spikes can burn electronic devices making them expensive paperweights.  Consider buying a twenty dollar surge protector to protect your investment

b. Consider a UPS (Battery Backup) to keep your computer from improperly shutting down.

4. Skipping or neglecting a backup routine

a. Your irreplaceable business and personal data are always in danger of a failed hard drive.  It’s not a matter of IF; it’s a matter of WHEN.

b. Use CD’s, Online Backup, External Hard Drive or Tape backup units to keep your data safe and secure.

c. Keep your most recent copy offsite at a bank vault, home or other location you feel safe keeping it stored.

5. Ignoring or failing to setup Windows Updates

a. These updates are crucial to the operation of your system as they often fix security issues and errors; let them run.

6. Letting friends or family use your PC

a. If it’s a work computer, its best left to do the work you want it to do.  Do not download music and other non work related items.

7. Unchecked Email attachments

a. If it looks suspicious, delete it without opening it or its attachments.  If it was important, the person who tried to send it to you will let you know soon enough.

Neonexus was recently hired by a West Virginia law firm to repair and improve a database tracking project. The database tracks the status of over 15000 product liability cases related to asbestos. The existing application still required some manual applications by the user. Neonexus has made it so the application is entirely automated, which is after all what computers are good at. The new application is now much more user friendly and takes less time to work with.

For those of you that maintain your own website or want our support but aren’t ready to have us take it over, we now offer website coaching. Coaching sessions can be a one time thing where we analyze every aspect of your website (SEO, programming, design and content) and give you a list of things that can be improved, or a month to month program, where we do the analysis, but give you only  a few things per month to work on so you are not overwhelmed with website improvements. How To Market Yourself Better

Keywords
One of the most important and inexpensive strategies to boost your website up in search engine rankings is to use keywords frequently throughout your site. Your page title should not have any filler words such as “the,” “and” etc. This page title will appear hyperlinked on the search engines when your site is found so you should list 2-4 keywords for each page of your site that relate directly to the site.

You need to write a description and a keyword meta tag. The description should be a sentence or two describing the content of the web page and using as many keyword as you possibly can. If you include keywords that aren’t on the web page, you could hurt yourself.

Make sure your keywords are in the first paragraph of your body text.Search engines expect that your first paragraph will include important keywords for the document, don’t just write an introduction to your site that barely uses your keywords.

Use keywords in hyperlinks.Search engines are looking for clues to the focus of your page. When they see words hyperlinked in your body text, they consider these extremely important, so hyperlink your keywords and important keyphrases.

There is a great tool that you can use to check out your keyword density and placement from an seo point of view at www.ranks.nl. The tool features options to show the page’s headers, page elements, outgoing links and more. It will warn you when it detects possible stop words, adult words, and “poisonwords”.

This gives you just a starting point for including those keywords. Just keep in mind keep everything relevant to your product and website. The more relevant content, the better!

Tech Tip- Supplied by Category 5 Networks

Increasing your wireless coverage
Want to provide consistent and added coverage for your wireless network?  How about a hot spot for your customers that visit your office or storefront?  Besides security, coverage can be a daunting issue.

If you have a wireless router, chances are it is not producing the optimal coverage in one way or another.  Is there a room or back corner where a wireless signal just doesn’t seem to reach?  More likely than not, it’s an appropriate router, just with insufficient antenna(s) that came with the router at the time of purchase.

Most retail wireless routers come with “low gain” antennas that provide minimal coverage.  There is light at the end of the tunnel though as there are many options to add a more powerful “high gain” antenna(s) inside or outside your home or office using your existing router.  These antennas can traverse several hundred feet all the way up to miles.  Yes, you heard it right, MILES.  By choosing the right antenna(s) and equipment, you can optimize distance and even share your office connection to your home or even share your home connection with a friend across the neighborhood.

Antennas come in all shapes and sizes.  There are directional (straight line point to point) and omni-directional (360 degree point to multipoint) overhead dome antennas for total room coverage and more.  All that’s required in most cases is antenna(s), cabling and a place to mount the equipment.  The cost expected could be a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the configuration needed.  ALWAYS consult a professional when dealing with electric equipment outdoors as these are more delicate installations and need to follow strict guidelines.

Want to hear more about this topic?  Have other ideas for future topics?  Write to Kim or myself and I will be glad to write about it in a future issue of this newsletter.

NeoNexus created a custom website for Chandler’s Limo, located in West Virginia, using lots of eye appealing design features. The scroll bar is just one example of the cool design features, for it has a very elegant look and feel to it. The website uses curved lines in the design, as well as themed pop-ups for the vehicle fleet. Chandler’s Limo also uses domain forwarding. They actually have two domains for the website that both go to the same address. The primary domain is www.chandlerslimo.com, however, you can also reach that domain by going to www.wv-limo.com.
